My paintings are an exploration of identity and culture through a humorous lens. Using large, colorful abstraction and representation, I create playful paintings that examine gender, female agency, and self expression. Much of my work has been inspired by the Abstract Expressionist movement, an art style defined by its gestural marks and bold confidence. More recently, I have been influenced by collage and how the process affects pre-existing objects. The personal choices behind the destruction and subsequent reconfiguration speak to larger ideas of power and agency. Collage allows control over the materials at hand, and yet is also confined by them as well. This contradiction is what attracted me to the style originally, and what continues to drive my work.
